Regional Tournament
AYSO Region 223 - Mt. Diablo Soccer ends the fall season with a Regional Tournament referred to commonly as the "playoffs". The tournament is for the under-10 through under-14 divisions following the fall season season. A number of the top teams at the end of the tournament will represent our Region at the Area 2C Tournament of Champions.
What is the Area 2C Tournament of Champions?
The Area 2C Tournament of Champions (TOC) is an AYSO-sponsored tournament made up of teams from each region in AYSO Area 2C established to determine the Area champions. Area 2C is composed of Mt. Diablo Soccer, Concord AYSO, Pleasant Hill Martinez Soccer Association, American Canyon AYSO, Richmond AYSO, Stockton AYSO, and Walnut Creek AYSO. TOC winners are then invited to compete in the Section 2 Tournament of Champions traditionally held on December in the Peninsula . Please click here for complete details on the Area 2C Tournament of Champions.
What teams may participate in the Regional Tournament?
The regional tournament is for the U10-U14 divisions only. The U16 and U19 divisions are invited to participate in the U16/U19 Area TOC which is held on its own respective weekend.
While it would be ideal that all teams participate in the regional tournament accomplishing the tournament over the course of two weekends and a limited number of fields requires that a limited number of teams be established. Traditionally, only the top eight teams in each division with eight or more teams advance to the regional tournament. Divisions with less than eight teams will send the next lower even number of teams. In other words, if a division has seven teams, only the top six teams advance. Those divisions with five teams will send the top four teams, etc. The final number of teams that participate in the regional tournament is subject to review each year and exceptions may be made to allow more teams to play depending on field availability and schedule.
When is the Regional Tournament and Area TOC held?
The opening matches of the regional tournament usually begins the first or second weekend in November. Schedules will be posted on the website. The Area TOC usually commences the weekend following the completion of the regional tournament.
Where are the Regional Tournament matches played?
Regional tournament matches are played on the fields that hosted the regular season matches. (Home matches for the U14 division teams that participated in inter-league play.) Area TOC matches are scheduled throughout Area 2C, which means that some teams may have to travel outside our region for matches.
How is the Regional Tournament structured?
Participation in the regional tournament is determined by the fall season standings (seedings). If the regional tournament cannot be completed in its entirety due to unforeseen circumstances, such as weather, the fall season standings will determine which teams advance to the Area TOC.
Group play only determines which teams advance. There are no semi-final or championship matches. Points are awarded using the standard a 11-point scoring system:
Win 6 points
Tie 3 points
Loss 0 points
1 point for each goal scored to a maximum of 3 points
1 point for a shut out
1 point for good sportsmanship
Minus:
1 point for a score differential greater than 6
1 point for poor sportsmanship
1 point for yellow card issued
3 points for red card issued
Example 1: Team A wins with a score of 3-0 and is awarded 10 points. (6 points for the win, plus 1 point for each goal scored to a maximum of 3, plus 1 point for the shutout.)
Example 2: Team B wins with a score of 5-0, but receives a yellow card during the match. Team B is awarded 9 points. (6 points for the win, plus 1 point for each goal scored to a maximum of 3, minus 1 point for the yellow card.)
Example 3: Team C and Team D play to a 1-1 tie. Each team is awarded 4 points. (3 points for the tie, plus 1 point for the goal scored.)
Example 4: Team E and Team F play to a 0-0 tie. Each team is awarded 4 points. (3 points for the tie, plus 1 point for the shutout.)
Tie-breakers:
1. Head-to-head.
2. Most goals scored.
3. Least goals allowed.
4. Fall season standing.
How many teams in our Region advance to the Area TOC?
The number of teams per region that participate in the Area TOC is ultimately determined by AYSO Area 2C Board. Traditionally, representation is determined by the proportion of teams each region fielded during the fall season relative to the total number of teams in the Area. For example, if our region fielded 12 U10 Boys teams and the Area as a whole fielded 36, and the TOC will be accepting a total of 12 U10 Boys teams, our region may be entitled to send its top four teams. This is not set, however, because there are other factors that may be considered such as tournament configuration, field locations, travel time, team availability, etc. |
